I am an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) psychotherapist and Integrative counsellor with many years experience of working with private clients and within the NHS in GP surgeries. I have had the opportunity to work with adults of all ages and with a wide range of problems, including trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, weight issues and low self-esteem. I also have experience in working with creative people, dealing with such issues as enhancing creativity, overcoming performance anxiety and removing barriers to productivity.
I am accredited by BABCP (British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies), CPC (Counsellors & Psychotherapists in Primary Care) and BSCAH (British Society of Clinical & Academic Hypnosis). I am also a member of BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy).
In recent years, CBT has become one of the most advocated forms of psychological therapy. It is promoted by the NHS and mental health experts as being the most effective and efficient form of therapy available for a wide range of psychological problems. My work is primarily influenced by CBT because I have found it successful in promoting positive change. CBT helps clients explore alternative ways of thinking and reacting and allows them to move forward in life.
There is, however, evidence that other forms of therapy, including solution-focused and integrated approaches, may be as effective as CBT. Some research suggests that the therapist is a more important variable than the method. The therapist who is able to form a good therapeutic alliance with you is more likely to help you achieve positive change in your life, irrespective of approach. Also important is the belief shared by you and your therapist that the chosen style of therapy is the one best suited to your needs. I have trained in a number of approaches, so I can tailor the therapy to suit you. I am committed to providing a supportive environment to enable you to openly address your concerns.
In working with me, you can expect to find a safe, confidential, non-judgmental and supportive place to explore your current concerns and discover solutions that work for you. Individual psychotherapy offers the opportunity to discuss and explore emotional concerns and difficulties in a safe space. I will help you understand how your problems developed and how they link to the present, thus empowering you to let go of old patterns of feelings and behaviours.
Therapy begins with an initial consultation during which we discuss your needs and explore your expectations. I believe that people have within themselves the resources and resilience to find ways to successfully manage their difficulties, so my aim is to foster this strength and independence. I also work in a time-limited framework and usually see people for between five and 20 sessions.
